Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol, Austria. Also called the capital of the Alps, the surrounding mountains are ever-present from the Inn valley where most of the 120,000 residents live and work. The heart of the city is its old town or Altstadt, with the famous Golden Roof at the centre. What always strikes me when walking around here, is how clean the city is. This is also not a place to be overly worried about crime. Innsbruck is the perfect base to explore the surrounding valleys, mountains and villages of Tyrol. It has also been a gateway to neighbouring Italy, Germany and Switzerland for centuries.
